Research Summary:
I am working on two aspects of introducing the staphylinid parasitoid Aleochara bipustulata to Canada from Europe for control of the cabbage maggot, Delia radicum, in canola. The first part is to identify populations of A. bipustulata that are well-suited to the climate of the Canadian prairies, and that will be synchronized with the cabbage maggot populations we have here. To do this, I am looking at the post-diapause thermal accumulation requirements several Canadian populations of D. radicum, and populations of A. bipustulata from different parts of Europe.
The second part involves assessing the risk to non-target species. I have a list of Diptera species that might be at risk, and I determine whether the puparia of these species will be attacked by larvae of the parasitoid.
