Insect Art

Have you ever heard about insect art? Strictly speaking insect art means fine wall art, artistic design or rather jewelry – respectively made with real insects. In the course of the previous years, insect craft projects have become very popular. Within general insect art artists revive dead insects. This means that artists use many creative techniques in order to let insects appear “live”. In this context it can also be said that insect art is amongst other things related to craft projects including insects such as bees, flies, ants, butterflies, spiders, ladybugs as well as many other species of bugs.

Of course there exists also general insect art apart from the artistic design by means of dead insects. This kind of insect art focuses for instance painting and drawing of a wide range of different and very interesting, in most cases rare, insects. Those artists, whose hobby consists in artistic as well as creative design of insects, are mostly bug-hunters or so-called entomologists. For all who have never heard about the expression ‘Entomology‘: Strictly speaking entomology is known as the scientific, intensive and profound study of insects. Furthermore it can be said that entomology represents an independent, discrete and self-contained branch – apart from the branch of arthropodology.

So what about painting and drawing of insects? Most artists are of great talent and consequently able to draw insects absolutely circumstantially. In this context it has also to be mentioned that insects are not only drawn and painted on paper, but also on t-shirts, walls, cars and so on. Designing a unique t-shirt with a rare insect for instance, in German they would simply say shirt gestalten, is one of many possibilities when it comes to general artistic as well as creative design of insects.

However, insect art with real insects that are dead has also become very popular. Many artists like to work with beetles because of their different and great colors. The design and art of an insect respectively depends on its species, size and form. Fact is that it is very difficult to color tiny and very small insects. So the smaller the respective insect turns out to be, the more time-consuming its artistic art will be. Furthermore, artists have to choose an appropriate color for the design of each insect.

Finally we want to introduce a great artist whose passion consists in photographing dead insects – this in connection with the artistic and creative design of insects: Magnus Muhr. Magnus Muhr has the talent to transform pests and tiny insects into real art. Strictly speaking he photographs dead insects and ‘revives’ them just by means of a few pencil strokes. Within his insect art flies are drinking beer and are mowing the lawn. Just have a look at the internet where everybody has the chance to get to know Magnus Muhr’s insect art.
